move toward better *daily health journal

The chance to move toward better can become a habit. -Seth Godin

hey,

there's something that i see a lot of people struggling with and i'd like to offer some insight here in case it helps somebody. once upon a time i needed to hear this myself, and when i did, it changed everything.

there is no magic pill, wrap, juice, diet, surgery, or smoothie, no shortcut and no fast way to being healthy. all it takes is daily intentional choices to eat clean, exercise, drink mostly water, and get a good night's sleep. seriously. that's it. being healthy is not complicated, expensive, or time-consuming.

it sounds simple but truly it's easier said than done. and that is why diet plans, juices, and quick fix methods are always so trendy. that is why bulky gym equipment sits unused in so many homes. (the amount of "like new" pelatons for sale online is very telling.) taking a risk on a quick fix with big promises can seem enticing and way more fun than making some simple lifestyle changes.

what actually contributes to a healthy lifestyle is consistent healthy habits. a decision, a commitment, and then intentional choices every day towards that commitment.

they say it takes 21 days to form a new habit. and day 22 the habit becomes routine. and by day 62, the routine is now a lifestyle.

here is the simple way to a healthy lifestyle:
1. decide
2. commit
3. get a friend to hold you accountable
4. begin to make changes
5. keep making changes
6. do it again the next day, and every day
7. give yourself grace, then get back in the race
8. repeat steps 1-7 as often as needed

and here is a free DAILY HEALTH JOURNAL download / printable and graphic for IG so you can hold yourself accountable to your friends online.

Prayers for Parenting

news flash: i believe wholeheartedly in the power of prayer. and i can't even imagine parenthood without prayer. when my kids were babies, i was encouraged by my pastor's wife to get fierce with my prayers for my children and my family. she handed out a pretty postcard with prayers filling up both sides. i kept it folded in our diaperbag for a while, later moved it to a pocket in my purse, for a while it was tucked inside my bible, and most recently i had that ratty old postcard taped on my bathroom mirror. i probably have these prayers memorized by now and yet their impact is just as powerful as it was the first time i prayed them.

mamas, we need to have a TAKE A STANCE IN ADVANCE approach when it comes to praying through parenting. it's time to link arms with God and surrender our children to His will. i know that i am a better, stronger, and more grounded parent when i go to God first and trust His good plans for their lives. parenting humbles me, and praying through it gives me strength to endure.

here are some of my most prayed PRAYERS FOR PARENTING:
(some original from April Simons, plus some new ones i've been praying over the years.)

// Thank You, God, that my children are a gift from You and that they are a blessing.

// Thank You, God, for supernatural wisdom and insight to raise my children.

// Thank You, Lord, for helping me to enjoy my children at each stage of their lives, and to choose joy through every season.

// Thank You, Lord, for empowering me to speak life into my children. Guard my tongue - help me to be an encourager and not a discourager.

// Thank You, Father, for wisdom in disciplining my children. Thank You for self-control, patience, and guidance.

// Thank You, Jesus, for helping me to not project my dreams, fears, or ideals onto my children. Thank You that my children are fearfully and wonderfully made in Your image.

// Thank You, Father, for peace in my home. Thank You for showing me anything in our schedule or environment that disrupts our peace, and for helping me establish peace here.

// Thank You, God, for eyes to see my children the way You see them. Help me speak what Your Word says about them instead of what I see in our circumstances.

// Father, thank You for empowering me with the Holy Spirit, for that still small voice of discernment and that "maternal instinct" that is undeniably You. To God be the glory.

// Thank You, God, for helping me to be a good listener, not distracted or too busy. I want to be present and available for my family.

// Thank You, God, for softening my heart, for helping me to be slow to anger and not easily offended, for reminding me to love and forgive, and for giving me a thankful spirit.

// Thank You, Lord, for grace and new mercies every day.

// God, thank You for a backbone to parent my kids standing firmly for what is right, what is holy, and what is pleasing to You. Thank You that we are called to be set apart and not of this world.

// Thank You, Father, for loving my children so much more than I can comprehend. Thank You for choosing and trusting me to be their mom. Thank You, God, that they are Yours. I trust Your plan for their lives.

// Thank You, God, that my children have a personal relationship with You. Thank You that they know who they are and Whose they are, and that they put their faith in You alone.

// Thank You, Lord, that I parent in faith and not in fear. Thank You that I am not parenting scared, but I parent with courage and faith. I trust You. Let my faith be an example to my children and a legacy for our family.

// Thank You, God, for sending friends teachers, coaches, and people in my children's life in Your perfect timing to fulfill Your perfect purposes.

// Thank You, Father, that my kids know You are ever present help in their times of need.

// Jesus, thank You that right now there is a family out there somewhere raising up godly children that will be my children's spouses someday. Thank You, God, that my children and their future spouses remain pure, seek You first, and honor You with their relationships. Thank You for the beautiful union You have prepared for their futures.

// Thank You, God, that Your Mighty Hand of Protection is over my children every hour of every day, everywhere they go. Surround them, Father, hedging them in Your care.

a m e n.

these prayers are saved to my instagram highlights so you can easily screenshot and save to pray again and again. or, click here for a printable version of PRAYERS FOR PARENTING.

"This is the confidence we have in approaching God:
that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
And if we know that he hears us - whatever we ask -
we know that we have what we asked of him."
-1 John 5:14-15

"Our prayers may be awkward. Our attempts may be feeble.
But since the power of prayer is in the One who hears it
and not in the one who says it, our prayers do make a difference."

back to school essentials ✏️

it's that time of year again: time to get ready to send the kids back to school. (cue the tears over here- this mama doesn't want school to start!! 😢)

in addition to notebook paper, backpacks, and freshly sharpened number two pencils, oh, and Clorox wipes and Kleenexes are always on the lists, too, here are a few of my back to school essentials. these things might not be as common as pink erasers and Expo markers, but they are MUST HAVES in our home every back to school season!

// PRAYERS & SCRIPTURE just like we wouldn't go into a battle unarmed, we don't go into the school year without prayer. prayer is our weapon of choice and scripture is our strategy. i love what Priscilla Shirer said: "Prayer is what opens up the floodgates for God to come down and be involved in our everyday circumstances." click here for a printable school year declaration/prayer. some of my favorite resources for growing your children's faith and praying for your children can be found HERE. tips from others on what/how to pray for your children HERE.

// DAILY DEVOTIONS i don't know about you but during the school year especially i feel like my kids and i spend a LOT of time together in the car. i'm all about making the most of every moment, so this year, we'll use drive time to listen to audible daily devotions. i downloaded The Purpose Driven Life Devotional for Kids audio book. every day when we're in the car together, we will listen to a 5 minute devotional and prayer. i think this will be a great way to set our focus and our hearts on Jesus on our way to wherever we're going.

// ROUTINES & EXPECTATIONS i heard once that disappointment is caused by unmet, unspoken expectations. and disappointment manifests itself in frustration, anger, anxiety, sadness, and resentment. to get ahead of that, i think it's important to make it very clear now- at the beginning of the school year - everyone's expectations. i also think it's important to establish routines. kids thrive with routines! and quite honestly, adults probably do, too! why? because we know what to expect. we know what time we need to wake up and be out the door, we know when it's time to work and time to play, we know where we're going and when we're supposed to be there. routines and rhythms set us up for success.

// LUNCHBOX NOTES i've only been packing my kids lunchboxes regularly for a couple of years now, but i love tucking little notes inside to make them smile or laugh or maybe even get a little bit embarrassed ;) i found cute lunchbox note notepads at Hallmark and Hobby Lobby for this year. Amazon has lunch box notes, and you can search for free printable lunchbox notes online, or just write your own notes on your kids' napkins like this dad hilariously did.

// FUN NAPKINS all year long i stockpile decorative party paper napkins to put in my kids' lunchboxes. my stash includes Lego, Harry Potter, floral, birthday, stripes, and napkins for all holidays. it's just a little fun thing again, to make my kids smile in the middle of their school day!

// THIEVES HAND SANITIZER SPRAY ok actually we use this year-round to keep our hands and surfaces germ-free. i put a spray bottle in their lunchboxes and backpacks, i keep a bottle in my purse, and a bottle in the car. i like that it's a spray, it dries/absorbs quickly, and smells like cinnamon/cloves- but it's not perfume or artificially scented - it's made with 100% essential oils. most hand sanitizers are made with harsh chemicals that irritate our skin, make our hands really dry, and/or have a strong alcohol odor. not this stuff! everyone's always asking what smells so good?! it's our hand sanitizer spray :) check out Thieves Sanitizing Spray here: https://www.youngliving.com/en_US/products/thieves-spray
other essential oils we stock up on this time of year: Lemon (mental clarity), Frankincense (emotional support/anti-anxiety), Stress Away, Peppermint (alertness), Valor (courage), Thieves (sickness prevention), PanAway (growing pains), and Lavender (peace and rest). see more at http://www.mamahall.com/p/wellessentially.html

// CUSTOM NAME LABELS parents know this: everything has to be labeled. bags, water bottles, sweaters, shoes, binders, books, pencil bags, ALL OF IT. if it isn't labeled, it might as well be lost forever. i like custom name labels that are safe to use in the dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, and are basically indestructible. there are several online custom name label shops- i like Minted, Mabels Labels, and Bright Star Kids.

what other "uncommon essentials" would you add to the list? it's going to be a GREAT school year! i hope you & your family have a wonderful back to school season! xo

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.
Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.
His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7

weekly menu planner 🍕📝

i've said it before and i'll say it a thousand times (because it bears repeating and i am forgetful): planning my family's weekly dinner menu is a total sanity saver. when i don't plan our menu, i end up rushing to the grocery store for quick dinner inspiration, or grabbing random ingredients for a last minute recipe, or we tend to dine out- which leads to not so healthy eating choices. it's a bad habit. and you know what they say, bad habits breed bad habits. not being prepared for our weeknight dinners is frustrating and stressful.

when i'm frustrated, unprepared, and stressed, i can't serve my family well. then the peace in our home is disturbed. it's a crazy cycle.

the one thing that has helped me stay consistent in menu planning is WRITING IT DOWN. i use a notebook, but i also like to use a calendar format so i can post it on the refrigerator and the family can see what's for dinner. it works for me and it works for them! i love serving my family- and this one simple habit sets me up for success.

if bad habits breed bad habits, good habits must breed good habits right?

*TGIT is our standing family date night and we dine out. tip: avoid the weekend rush! restaurants are less busy on Thursdays. YOYO is "you're on your own" for dinner aka eat all the leftovers and clean out the fridge :)

i made this printable menu planner calendar and it definitely helps! you can download and print the menu planner here:

here's to menu planning and keeping good habits! xoxo

6 tips for a peaceful home

"you have a very peaceful home."

that has to be one of the greatest compliments a person could give me. i didn't know those words would mean so much, and i didn't realize "peaceful home" was a hope of my heart, until about 8 years ago when someone walked into my house and described it as peaceful. we had two young children at the time, so "peaceful" wasn't really even on my radar. my radar was more focused on sweeping up Cheerios, babyproofing cabinets, and corralling toys. but since that day that friend paid me that incredible compliment, my heart shifted and "peaceful home" became an intentional priority.

"peaceful home." i like that. peaceful is how i want my family to feel when they are home. it's how i want visitors to feel when they come inside. it's like my home is a big gentle hug, making everyone feel peaceful, calm, welcomed, relaxed, warm, loved, nurtured, protected, valued, supported. i absolutely believe God wants us to live in peace, and it's worth it to me to make a conscious effort to create a peaceful home.

"My people will live in peaceful dwelling places,
in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest."
-Isaiah 32:18

the impact of this intention was reaffirmed a few years later when we were getting ready to move and our house was on the market. a potential buyer - a complete stranger - toured our home and left feedback with the realtor that the house had a "real peace" about it. those words meant so much to me!

the best part about it is, even though it's a priority and intention, creating a peaceful home doesn't require much effort. apparently i was already doing things that gave our home a peaceful vibe without even realizing it. once creating a peaceful home became a goal, other habits naturally fell into place. it became a mindset and way of life. the benefits of our peaceful home: contentment, joy, rest, confidence, love, faith, comfort - for those of us who live here and for those who visit - are absolutely worth the efforts to create that peace.

SIX TIPS TO CREATE A PEACEFUL HOME:

// MINIMIZE CLUTTER. find a place out of sight to store paper piles, mail, and other odds and ends that tend to clutter up surfaces. the kitchen countertops in my home are where clutter tends to pile up, so i make a daily effort to sort and store as much of it as i can. a purge-mentality is good here especially when it comes to papers. if it's a magazine or flier, read it and recycle it. if it's a bill or school paper or something, deal with it and file it away. if it's a keepsake, put it in storage. develop a 0 tolerance for paper clutter. scour pintrest for clutter-taming ideas! and then put a plan into action.

// MINIMIZE NOISE. there's a reason why "peace" and "quiet" always go together. i figured out recently that one of the major reasons i don't like shopping at a particular grocery store is because of the noise level. squeaky buggy wheels, voices on employee walkie talkies, the store alarm going off because of a rogue sensor, commercials on the radio overhead, buggies crashing, registers beeping, loading equipment in reverse, and inevitably there's a child crying somewhere across the store. it's nerve-wracking! it's difficult to relax in a noisy environment. and that applies at home, too. keeping distracting noise to a minimum will definitely contribute to a peaceful home. sometimes, in our home, i'll turn on the radio or a playlist for background noise during the day, but otherwise, it's peace and quiet. right now the only sounds i hear are the quiet gurgling of my oil diffuser, the bubbles of the aquarium, rain, and birds chirping outside. i keep the television off all day because the sound of TV is distracting and chaotic (and mostly toxic) for our heads and our hearts. try turning the sounds off or down and see if it helps create peace. if you prefer background noise, find something that contributes to a peaceful, uplifting atmosphere.

// MAXIMIZE NATURAL LIGHT. draw the curtains and open the shades, even if it's a cloudy day. (especially if it's a cloudy day!) natural light is so much more peaceful and inviting than LEDs and fluorescents. one of my friends was working on improving her family's bedtime routines, and recommended working with the natural light. so at dusk, instead of turning on more lights in the house, she kept the lights off. as the sun went down, and the house darkened, her children started to relax and they were all able to fall asleep easier at bedtime. let the natural light in! artificial lights are stimulants that affect our peace and the moods of our home.

// MAXIMIZE WHAT'S MEANINGFUL. there is a certain personal peace that comes with being able to look around your home and see things that hold special meaning for you and your family. when we first moved into this house i rushed to buy a painting for over the mantle in the living room. the art was fine, but i couldn't stand it. it was sterile and meant nothing to me. for months i had to see it every day in my living room. it stole my peace! i would much rather have something on my wall that has a story behind it than a forgettable fancy painting. model homes are pretty but no one lives there so they have no personality. it's a wonderful, welcoming feeling to be surrounded by things that are unique to your family for a reason - things that reflect who you are and why. think of the lyrics in "A Million Dreams" from The Greatest Showman: "there's a house we can build; every room inside is filled with things from far away. special things i compiled- each one there to make you smile on a rainy day..." pictures in frames, decorations on walls, books in stacks, knickknacks on shelves - make the things in your home meaningful and it will create a peaceful aesthetic for you and your family.

// MINIMIZE MESS STRESS. what messes in your home stress you out? dirty dishes in the sink? unmade beds? shoes in the middle of the floor? for me it's cluttered kitchen countertops and dirty floors. i can look past almost everything else (for a time) but if my kitchen counters aren't clear or my floors are a mess, then i am completely stressed out. and if i'm not at peace in my own home, than surely others won't be able to find peace in my home. my stress will affect everything and everyone around me. but if my counters are clear and my floors are clean, i can relax. the tip here is to identify the messes that stress you out and make it a priority to tackle those areas regularly, so that you can be at peace, and therefore, everyone else in your home will be at peace.

// MAXIMIZE KIND WORDS. you know that toxic noise i mentioned earlier? sometimes it comes from our own mouths. ouch. but think about it, which is more peaceful: a home where people are sarcastic, yelling, spitting insults, or disrespectful to one another? or a home where people speak positively, affirm one another, are kind, respectful, use manners, and pay compliments to one another? if the words we're speaking in our homes are critical and harsh, we're filling the atmosphere with toxins that will affect our hearts and rob us of peace. but when we're speaking words of joy and life, peace follows. fill your home with kind words and peaceful tones of voice. in fact, i would encourage you to pray over your household often and aloud. there is POWER and PEACE in prayer and our words!

home should be a place of refuge and comfort. havens for our families and loved ones to enjoy God's blessings together. i know that keeping home comes with lots of responsibilities, especially if you have children. and i think we all would agree that we want our husbands to come home to and our children to grow up in a peaceful home. well, it's our responsibility to create that peace in our homes, and put it at the top of our priorities list. creating peace will bless your family and guests when they're in your home.

people who live in a peaceful home find contentment at home. if home isn't a place of peace, why would anyone want to spend time there? if home isn't peaceful, what's there to look forward to at the end of a long day at the office? if home isn't where i feel relaxed or comfortable, i will want to get out of the house every chance i get. i'll get cabin fever in my own home and want to escape it. if home is a place of negativity, clutter, and stress, my children will prefer to go to the neighbors or somewhere else where they can find peace. i don't want that. i want my people to walk into our house and say "ahhh...it's good to be home." (you, too? get the free printable reminder here)

if you think you're too busy to even think about creating peace in your home, it might be an issue of poor time management or a cycle of bad habits. in that case, i like THESE SUGGESTIONS from Natasha Crain.

a peace and quiet home sweet home can be a reality by doing a few intentional things to make it happen. choose to make peace a priority, a mindset, and a way of life for you and your home and everyone who enters.

"Zion, praise your God!
He made your city secure,
he blessed your children among you.
He keeps the peace at your borders,
he puts the best bread on your tables."
-Psalm 147:12
//

"May the Lord bless you and protect you.
May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you.
May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace."
-Numbers 6:24-26

THIS IS THE YEAR // 2017 goals 🎉

this is the year i set out to...

MAIL CARDS // i realized mid-2016 that i hoard new greeting cards. i have a drawer full of pretty, unsent cards just waiting to put a smile on someone's face in the snail mail. i considered donating my cards collection, but decided to instead make it a goal to empty out that drawer by mailing out every card! my Grandma Jo kept a perpetual calendar in her dining room with all the family members' birthdays and anniversaries listed in her perfect handwriting. when i was at her house earlier this month i took a picture of her calendar and was inspired to send cards on all the occasions. i'm very excited about this! my mailbox is going to be busy! note to self: buy postage stamps.

HAVE A HOUSE CLEANING SCHEDULE // my current cleaning schedule is more like "as needed" and "hurry we have company coming over." but every time i see Clean Mama's instagram, i'm like golly i need a real house cleaning schedule! Clean Mama i love your ways! every day is a different focus so that by the end of the week, the entire house is clean. bits and pieces. and then i can do other chores as needed.

RACK UP FEWER LIBRARY FINES // this is my loftiest goal yet. i'm really praying about this one. i may have set the bar too high here. i mean, don't get me wrong, i support the local public library and all. i'm just thinking we shouldn't need a Dave Ramsey envelope for monthly library fines. we can get our books in on time.

CLEAN OUT VANITY DRAWERS // honestly, how many travel size tubes of Clinique moisturizer does one girl need? 56 apparently. and that's just in 1 drawer. there are 3 drawers in my vanity that need a serious overhaul: cleansers, cosmetics, and hair accessories. this is the year those drawers get cleaned, emptied, and refilled only with what is useful and good.

PUT PHOTOS IN ALBUMS // the good news is that i am really good about printing our photos so they don't exist only digitally on the computer or on my phone. the bad news is, all those printed 4x6s are overflowing into 2 DRAWERS in my dresser. they are nice and neatly labeled, organized by date, and just need to be put into some nice albums! easier said than done? we'll see.

LIVE CONFIDENT // i heard Amy Cuddy in a fascinating interview on NPR the other day and she spoke on being present, confident, and strong in every moment. i like the way "present" was defined, as "the state in which we stop worrying about the impression we're making on others and instead adjust the impression we've been making on ourselves." it's about being/feeling genuine and commanding (confident not arrogant) instead of being/feeling phony and powerless. projecting joy, not fear. living certain, not doubtful. inspired! Cuddy's book "Presence" is in my Amazon cart and on my to-read list. here is the audio of the NPR interview.

LOVE-FILTER MY WORDS // talk less and say more. or, as Proverbs 10:19 puts it, be sensible and keep your mouth shut. all too often the heart of a message is buried in empty remarks, excuses, over-explanations, back stories, and reasoning. my goal is simply to say what needs to be said, and to say it with heart and with purpose. to take time to think about the hearer/reader before i speak/write/post. Psalm 19:14 is my prayer: "may the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, Lord"

READ AND WRITE // according to the list in my phone notes, i read 19 books in 2016! oh the pressure is on now to finish the one i'm reading to make it an even 20! i love to read and i will continue reading in the new year, adding completed books to the list in my phone notes. i also love to write and have re-started writing in my journal. i have a journal for personal, daily notes/thoughts, and i have a journal for notes/thoughts from my morning quiet time with Jesus. reading and writing bring me joy.

BE OBSESSIVELY GRATEFUL // a few months ago i overheard someone describe a friend as a "constant complainer" and it made me cringe as if it was a nasty curse word. what a horrible way of life, an image i'm sure no one wants to convey. definitely not me. i decided then that the opposite of constantly complaining is obsessively grateful. and it's all about perspective. call it glass half full or rose colored glasses or what have you. i call it a joyful way of life!

what about you? what are your goals for 2017? need more inspiration?

fun changes this school year! + printables

the 2016-2017 school year is off to a great start. it feels like i'm talking about someone else's kids when i say that they are in 7th and 4th grade.

some fun changes for my sweet girl this year! she is going to a university model school twice a week for 7th grade classical Christian education, and is at home the other three days for homework and application. this means we pack lunches, lay out clothes, and get up super early to take her to school twice a week. that is new for us! we are adjusting. :) as we approached the upper grade school years, we knew she needed and was ready for more - more academics, more challenges - than what we could offer at home. she is taking 6 courses including Latin, Algebra, and Speech and Debate. we felt like this was a good year to immerse her into a school/classroom experience, and we believe this school in particular - rigorous! places responsibility on the students! - will adequately prepare her for college. class of 2022! i am so proud of her.

bubba is home with me full time for 4th grade. i am really enjoying the one-on-one time with him on the days sister is in school. we get focused time for his academics, but also quality time for a few hours after he finishes his work. his favorite subject is Math, and it's also the hardest subject, he says. he also loves Story of the World and Science. he likes to grade his own papers and really pushes himself to beat his own scores each day. his least favorite subject is English. i get it. sentence diagramming.

our 4th grade homeschool curriculum:
Saxon 5/4 Math
BJU Press English 4
Story of the World Vol 2
BJU Press Science 4
Handwriting Without Tears Cursive Success

both kids are in dance (her: advanced lyrical, him: intermediate hip hop), in Martial Arts (her: advanced brown belt, him: red belt), and are plenty socialized, i assure you. :)

i met a lady at church who is a few years ahead of me and when i mentioned that we homeschool, she put her hand gently on my shoulder, looked me in the eyes, and said, "let me encourage you, homeschooling is incredibly rewarding." she went on to tell me that her homeschooled daughter is in her second year of college and is bearing the fruit of her years at home under the teaching and guidance of her parents. her words definitely encouraged me!

not all of our days of homeschooling feel rewarding, but we keep the end goal in sight, our "why" as our foundation and motivation, and kind words from families who have been there done that tucked in our hearts, and we keep on.

i pray my kids will be alert and discerning, will grow in their walk with Jesus, pursue wisdom joyfully, and be salt and light in the world.

happy new school year!

we surprised the kids! Disney World + Universal Studios

when hubby and i were talking about ideas for our 2015 family vacation and Disney World entered the conversation, first of all YES, and secondly, LET'S SURPRISE THE KIDS! we've pulled it off twice already in 2009 and again in 2013...i just love surprises!

of all our vacation options on the table, i voted for Disney World for several reasons (i mean, it's DISNEY WORLD) but most of all i considered the ages of our children: 7 and 10. i thought about how much they would be able to enjoy WDW in it's entirety this year, the bigger rides, the late nights, how much they would appreciate it this year, and how much more they would be able to remember this year years from now. i thought about how much they love the newer Disney movies (Big Hero 6, Inside Out, Frozen!) and what fun it would be for them to see the characters in person. i wondered if Disney World would ever be as magical for them as it is right now at this age. it probably would be, but is that a chance i'm willing to risk?

looking at the dates we wanted to travel (off season-yay homeschooling!) we stumbled upon a very special event happening at Disney World the very week we would be there: Night of Joy. two nights of concerts at Magic Kingdom by some of our family's favorite artists: TobyMac, MercyMe, Jeremy Camp, Colton Dixon, Big Daddy Weave, Francesca Battistelli, Rend Collective, I Am They, Josh Wilson, Lecrae, for KING & COUNTRY, Mandisa, Matt Maher, Jamie Grace, 7eventh Time Down, and VERIDIA.

and that pretty much sealed the deal. we were going to Disney World! i just had one special request - that we also visit Universal Studios. we have never been to Universal Studios before but this year it was practically mandatory. because in 2014, Big Girl and i read the Harry Potter series and FELL IN LOVE with all things Hogwarts. after reading each book, we gathered the boys and watched the movies, one at a time. by the end of Deathly Hallows, our whole family was hooked on Harry Potter. and in case you are unaware, Universal Studios Orlando recently opened a new park: the Wizarding World of Harry Potter with a train (Hogwarts Express) that goes from Diagon Alley to Hogsmeade! you know how some women tear up at Subaru commercials? i was misty-eyed when i first saw the commercial for Wizarding World of Harry Potter. not even kidding. i just knew the kids would FLIP OUT to go to Hogwarts!

this vacation was pretty much a dream vacation: Disney World, Harry Potter, and Night of Joy. we made all the arrangements in secret, we talked in code, we whispered and smirked and schemed, keeping the surprise from the kids for 5 months! torture! but totally worth it!

we finally revealed the surprise to the kids a few weeks ago. "just for fun" we had a Harry Potter movie night every week starting 8 weeks prior to our trip, watching all 8 Harry Potter movies in order. on the night of the final movie, perfectly planned for the two nights before our trip, we were all getting settled in when there was a knock at the door! the dogs barked like crazy and i looked out the window and announced "it must have been a delivery." i asked the kids to get the delivery while i put the dogs out back (and grabbed my camera). on the front porch, the kids found these letters...

the letters are from Prof. McGonagall personally inviting them to begin their term at Hogwarts. i found the free printable and customizable letter and Harry Potter font HERE. i melted a red crayon to seal the letters and scattered feathers around the porch to make it look like Hedwig delivered it!

the kids screamed and gasped and hugged each other and jumped all around as they read their letters aloud. i thought i was taking a video but i forgot to press the button OOPS! still, i'll never forget their reaction. sheer joy! it was amazing. i cried.

they were crazy excited to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios! over their squeals i said, "but wait, there's more..." and i handed them a gift bag...

in the bag they found their Disney World Magic Bands and Mickey Mouse t-shirts (ordered from Target) and Harry Potter t-shirts (designed by me, printed locally).

hubby and i sat back and watched as the realization slowly hit them. it was like watching fireworks- the excitement rising and rising until finally BOOM! OMG WE'RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD AND UNIVERSAL STUDIOS!?!? yes, my child.

"but wait, there's more..." and i handed them each a Night of Joy concert ticket.

i made these using this ticket generator. (the internet is nice) two nights of concerts! our favorite artists! at Disney World! Bubba saw TobyMac's name on the ticket and nearly fainted. seeing TobyMac at Disney World is somehow more magical than seeing Mickey Mouse himself.

we did it! we surprised the kids again with a trip to Disney World! it was wonderful. everything i'd hoped for and more. i'm so thankful!

i have a few Disney / Universal travel tips to share, too. stay tuned :)

back to school prayer printable

my Facebook feed is 99% first day of school pictures today and i love it. huge smiles, new backpacks, new shoes, fresh haircuts, big yellow school buses, and lots of mamas with teary eyes.

let's pray.

let's start the school year off thanking God for His peace and protection over our children, our teachers, our schools, and our homes. this prayer was prayed with families the night before school started in 2011 by my pastor's wife. it's a powerful declaration claiming God's promises. it's my go-to prayer for back to school season.

post this prayer next to the hooks where the kids hang their backpacks, or near on the kitchen counter where you pack lunches, or on the back door so you see it on your way out. and pray.

"Prayer is what opens up the floodgates for God to come down and be involved in our everyday circumstances." -Priscilla Shirer

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.
Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.
His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7

my favorite hat // free printable for moms

i wear lots of hats. you probably do, too.

i have quite the collection: chef, chauffer, laundry-doer, dishwasher, home manager, appointment setter, grocery shopper, domestic engineer, ministry leader, volunteer, fitness coach, conference hostess...

most days i don't think of them as hats, i don't go through motions of switching hats, taking off one and putting on another. it's just my life. the hats flow and merge and overlap. the hats don't usually feel cumbersome or like they are going to topple off, and i really don't even count all my hats until someone on the outside looks in and makes a comment like "you're busy!" or "how do you do it all?"

those comments make me stop and i probably furrow my brow because i'm just like my grandmother sometimes and can't hide my feelings well and the absolute truth is i don't feel busy or like i'm doing much at all. i'm just doing my life and i said yes to these hats. i love each of them.

but my favorite hat of all is my Mom Hat. the one i've been wearing for 10 and a half years and will never ever ever take off. the hat that makes these two mine and me theirs. the hat that trumps all other hats anytime. the hat tailor-made by God just for me.

i saw this cute print at an antique market festival and had to take a selfie with the World's Best Kids. i almost bought the print for myself but i couldn't get over 1) the $25 price tag and 2) lucky. because not to be a stickler or get caught up in technicalities or anything, but luck is for the lottery and clovers and pennies. it's not by luck that i get to be my kids' mom. it's by the grace of God. and i thank Him constantly for this sweet gift.

i liked the sentiment so much that i whipped up my own version of the print and here, you can have one, too:

WORLD'S BEST KIDS

i made this version, too, with Ang and Rox in mind ;)

tipping my hat to you, mamas. xo

totally amazing // teacher appreciation gift tags

teacher appreciation week is NEXT WEEK May 4-8.

don't panic.

run to your nearest Target One Spot dollar section and grab one of these adorable reusable tote bags for your child's teacher(s). print out these equally adorable tags and BOOM! insta-gift! your teachers will be thankful for something that is practical! something they can use to carry home all the other gifts of candy, coffee mugs, scented lotions, and Gala apples. :)

i made these for our homeschool co-op teachers which is why my tags say "semester" but i changed the printable tags to say "school year" since most children have had the same teachers all year. these would make great end of school year gifts, too!

feeling extra fancy? fill the tote bag with a journal, some Seattle's Best Keurig coffee pods, a bottle of Voss water, and maybe a pretty summery scarf? show your teachers some love!
