works for me: write it in red

my first grader just brought home an official blue ribbon for earning SUPERIOR ratings at a speech meet. wow i am so incredibly proud of her. she was required to memorize a bible verse, she chose Psalm 121:1-4, and recite it in front of 3 very scary and intimidating judges. or maybe they were just other kids moms. either way, it was a big deal.

and she did it. she memorized the verse and impressed the judges, earning herself a fancy blue ribbon with SUPERIOR stamped in gold.

to help her memorize her scripture, i wrote it on a full sheet of paper in red. i had heard somewhere a few years ago that writing in red is an effective memorization technique. i posted the red-ink'd paper at her eye level in several places around the house: on the refrigerator, on the back door, by the front door, on the stairway, on the mirror. there was no escaping the bold red words.

"I lift my eyes to the hills, where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip. He who watches over you will not slumber.
Indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep."
Proverbs 121:1-4

it worked. in a matter of weeks she memorized her bible verse. the entire family did. even the dogs. it's crazy, you should hear them.

we're even using this scarlet system for remembering spelling words!

writing in red works for us for memorization!
