mirrors and rays // everlasting light

And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.
-Genesis 1:3-4

the bible verse our family adopted as our mission is from Matthew 5: "You are the light of the world...let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

i recently read about a valley town in Norway that is surrounded by steep forested hills, which is beautiful...except the town was literally in a shadow every year for half of the year. the town was hidden from the sunlight, and the community lived for six long months each year in cold darkness.

we know light is good. God said so; He made it that way. i imagine the people in that valley town grew weary of the dark sky and artificial lights. as much as i love a good rainy day, or a deep winter night, i crave light. good. God.

last year, Norwegian authorities built three giant mirrors on the hilltops so the sunlight would reflect onto the shadowy town. the mirrors move automatically to follow the sun, catch the rays, and light the valley from sunrise to sunset year-round.

when we are in dark valleys, when things seem perpetually dim, God is light. in Him is no darkness at all. He shines. and we can be like mirrors, catching the light and reflecting it...we are promised everlasting light.

i love this starburst mirror in our home. i love how it catches the sun's rays and reflects light, and reminds me that God is light, light is good, and i will shine.

...but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light -Ephesians 5:8

He counts the stars and calls them by name -Psalm 147:4

You will shine…like stars in the sky. -Philippians 2:15

Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. -Isaiah 60:1

...the Lord will be your everlasting light... -Isaiah 60:20

"from this darkness you will lead us and forever we will say you're the Lord our God!
You're the light of all, and all that we need."
